Finishing Charity quilts of Jane's stash

I picked up a couple of unfinished quilts from Audrey Prothero, who is helping to get her sister Jane's charity quilts completed. Jane passed away a few months back, and had nearly 100 quilts that needed to be finished. Most of the blocks were done, and some were already sewn together. It was quick to get them sewn together. And it was just as quick to get them quilted on my sit-down longarm.

Here they are:

44" x 56". The blocks were all done. I added the black sashing, border, backing and binding. It was quilted with red thread.

38" x 44". The blocks were all done and were sewn into rows. I added the sashing, borders, backing and binding.

I hope whomever gets these quilts likes them!

Striped fabric - 2 more charity quilts

As I was finishing up the charity quilts made with striped fabric, a member of my small quilt group came downstairs with more striped fabric that I could use. I know that all of us experienced quilters have a huge stash of fabric. At our ages (somewhere north of retirement age!), we know that we will never be able to use up all the material we have. So, I took it and made 2 more striped quilts for our charity group.

For these two, I cut the squares on-grain, instead of on the bias, so that I could use as much of the fabric as possible. Both of these had two striped fabrics in them, and I set them off with pinwheels again, which I just think it so adorable. Anyway, here they are:

Charity quilt #5 from Kaffe Fassett fabrics - Flying colors

This is the 5th quilt top that I made from the box of donated fabrics from Audrey Prothero. She loves Kaffe Fassett fabrics and has so much that she asked me to see if I could make some charity quilt tops from them. December is the month of the year that I dedicate to making charity quilts and quilt tops (also baking Christmas cookies!). I had lots of time to sew with the snowy weather this year.

I found this quilt as a free pattern from Art Gallery Quilts and its called "Flying Colors". I purchased 3 yards of navy blue grunge for the background and used the Kaffe Fassett material for all of the colored pieces. It's entirely made from flying geese blocks and using the no-waste method that is also detailed in the free pattern. The quilt pattern makes a quilt that is 60" x 60". That is a tad too short for our charity group, so I added 3 @ 3" strips at the top, middle and bottom. This quilt top measures 60" x 69".

Opening Night pictures of "Whispers in the Wind"

Our opening night reception of the Vagabonds show "Whispers in the Wind" was held on Friday, December 6th. The Second Story Gallery does such a nice job of mounting the art displays, lighting them fantastically, providing the helpers for the reception, and finding a great musician. Two pieces were sold on the opening night, and the other 79 that are still on sale will be on display in the gallery through January. I hope you get a chance to get to Camas and see the show.

Whisper Challenge - part Eight

This blog is part of the series about the Whisper Challenge quilts.

I got this little 12" x 12" quilt from Val Pellens. It was the 7th one in the series for Audrey Prothero.
This quilt is a beautifully painted and quilted peacock with a few beads attached. I'm guessing that the theme could be all about feathers, since peacocks are known for the beautiful feathers. Or it could be about eyes since they are prominent on this piece. Or it could represent a bird theme. Oh my gosh. I know that Audrey likes turquoise, so perhaps it just about the color. I know that she has a tremendous sense of humor and loves to laugh. Her sunny disposition and giggle always make me feel good. I had to put on my thinking cap for this one.

In the end, I decided that it HAD to be turquoise, and because I like (and collect) feathers, I decided to just give her a feathered hat. And the humor.....well, see what you think.

Whisper Challege - Part Six

This blog is part of the series about the Whisper Challenge quilts.

I got this little 12" x 12" quilt from Audrey Prothero. It was the 5th one in the series for Ada Levins.
This quilt was a departure from any of the others that I has seen and it it clearly had portraits of Frida Kahlo with a Mexican feel to the flowers. There's not much color on it; mostly black and white. I think that I will continue with the floral theme and perhaps use a little more of the black and white, but without the artist.

And here is the one that I made. I used a tropical themed fabric with a layer of turquoise organza on the top. Then I made a bunch of black and white flowers that I appliqued to the background.
